Carlsbad, CA, – March 15, 2011 – TC Technology announces that West Des Moines Water Works, located in West Des Moines, Iowa, deployed GO! Sync Mapbook with the Inspection Extension to field staff. The intuitive sketching and mapping software seamlessly extends West Des Moines Water Works’ enterprise geographic information system (GIS) to personnel using rugged laptops.
West Des Moines Water Works is a full service water utility with 37 full time employees at two locations. In addition to operating and maintaining a 12 million gallon per day facility, West Des Moines Water Works is responsible for the operation of more than 220 miles of water mains, approximately 2000 fire hydrants and valves, 22 wells, 6 pumping stations, 4 water storage reservoirs, and 5 water towers.
To improve GIS, West Des Moines Water uses GO! Sync Mobile GIS to automate data collection and data validation procedures. Using simple forms, staff enters the latest information about facilities, which automatically updates GIS when online.
Additionally, maintenance work procedures are improved through automation. For example, when a hydrant requires new paint a record is created by an inspector with a field unit. Once complete, the record is automatically uploaded to the server to initiate a work cycle. A similar process is used for valve maintenance.
“Our field crews were using paper forms to record their inspections and then that information had to be entered into our GIS. Having the ability to access our GIS in the field and make the updates automatically has been a great addition” states Kevin Trevillyan, Engineering Technician, West Des Moines Water Works. “GO! Sync Mobile GIS was easy to deploy and our field crews have stated that the software is very easy to use.”
With GO! Sync Mobile GIS, organizations like West Des Moines Water Works recognize the advantages of extending GIS into the field. Workers benefit from real time data and the latest maps while field operations boosts productivity, automating such tasks as planned and unplanned work, routine maintenance, and underground locating. Water utilities use the Inspection Extension to simplify hydrant inspections and valve monitoring tasks.
